Position Summary

This role provides actuarial pricing support and portfolio analysis across all the business of CNA Hardy (Europe and Lloyd’s syndicate 382) within the Actuarial Pricing function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake detailed analysis covering all aspects of the pricing function. This will include collaborating with peers.
  • Support the enhancement and embedding of rating models, tools and rate relativities for all lines of business and regions across CNA Hardy.
  • Support the actuarial business partner for specified lines of business developing guidance on the performance of those lines of business
  • Extract and analyse pricing, insurance and financial data to enhance pricing guidance and business performance
  • Collate appropriate quantitative metrics including the internal rate monitoring process, management information, portfolio analytics and profitability analysis. Help to embed their use within the business
  • Support the company’s project to move its rating models into a web-based enterprise rating engine
  • Undertake large account pricing for all lines of business and regions including enhancing the use of internal and external data in the pricing of accounts
  • Carry out other aspects of the pricing and underwriting control cycle as required including
    • Portfolio profitability and rate reviews
    • Analysis in support of strategic initiatives
    • Analysis in support of the business planning cycle
    • Underwriter training
    • Engage in predictive analytics projects with a pricing focus
  • Work with senior members of the actuarial team in preparing committee papers and business presentations
  • Prepare and present business and management updates and training.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Flexible thinking; an ability to learn Actuarial models and approaches for a range of standard and specialised products, and to combine account, portfolio and external data sources.
  • A user of large data sets with an enthusiasm to undertake detailed data driven analysis and portfolio investigations. Ability in extracting, manipulating, enhancing and visualising a variety of data sets that can feed into analyses. This is expected to lead on to supporting future predictive analytics and machine learning projects.
  • Commercial-mindedness and the ability to develop business understanding including insurance financial statements and performance metrics
  • The ability to input into large multidisciplinary projects, including working to deadlines in an agile working environment  
  • Willingness to support change and innovation in the business and champion improved analytics
  • Professionalism and thoroughness
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with other disciplines
  • Appropriate knowledge of all relevant regulatory and legal requirements applicable to the position

Education & Experience

  • Prior work experience in a role requiring detailed data analysis and modelling experience. Insurance experience and/or wider actuarial experience is highly preferable.
  • The ability to understand and work with a large volume of data across a range of systems is a prerequisite.
  • Experience of business metrics and performance – the ability to make detailed use of insurance systems and data sources
  • Experience of predictive analytics is highly desirable
  • A requirement to undertake the actuarial exams
  • Strong IT literacy – facility with MS Excel and databases are necessary, use of Rulebook, @Risk, ResQ, R, Python, XML, SQL, VBA, Tableau or Alteryx would be a distinct advantage
  • Experience of large scale, multi-discipline, project delivery
  • European languages would be an advantage, but are not necessary
